The Memorial Tournament
Another action packed week of golf last week. Last week Jason Kokrak captured The Charles Schwab in an incredible fashion. Kokrak beat out the 54 hole leader Jordan Spieth on Sunday afternoon. Now Jordan didn’t put up much of a fight shooting over par round of 73 and finishing in second place. Kokrak however, remained composed and captured his second victory of the year. Since Kokrak’s first win at the CJ Cup last fall he’s been playing some top tier golf so his second victory was bound to happen sooner rather than later. Although Jordan did blow his lead and his chance at a second title this season, he’s in prime form to not only win again but to win another major very very soon. Now aside from Kokrak’s second win of the season there has been some huge news around the rest of the golf world.
Jumping on over to the Senior Tour, Alex Cejka is making some incredible moves. In just his 5th start on the Senior PGA Alex Cejka has captured his second major in a row. His story the past 6 weeks has just been incredible. 6 weeks ago Cejka Monday qualified into an event and came in second place which moved him on to the next week where he won his first major, and no less than 3 weeks later he does it again and wins another major. The craziest thing about all of this is that Cejka is actually younger than Phil Mickelson, so for the first time ever the Senior PGA Champion is younger than the PGA Tour PGA Champion. That right there is why I absolutely love golf, age is only in your mind, if you take care of your body and mind you can compete at the highest level for so many years. Hats off to Alex, he’s on an absolute tear right now.
Now this next piece of incredible golf news will definitely pull on your heart strings. Last week mini tour grinder Mike Visacki was competing in The Charles Schwab on a sponsor exemption. Now Mike is a stud on the mini tours notches over professional wins, but he’s yet to make that big break. This is where Justin Thomas came in. Mike ultimately ended up missing the cut and for anybody that doesn’t know if you don’t make the cut you don’t get paid, so Justin Thomas fixed that situation really quick. Out of his own pocket JT cut a check to Mike to help him continue his dreams to ultimately play on the PGA Tour. Now this right here is what golf is all about. Say what you want about JT, but this man has a great heart and his head is in the right place. I can totally sympathize with Mike considering we are both in the same situation when it comes to golf, grinding on mini tours looking for that big break that will propel us into something even better and I know for a fact that this money will change Mike’s life. Hats off to Justin Thomas and his team for this gesture of total kindness and the best of luck to Mike and he continues the grind.
Golf fans, we are in store for yet another star studded week. This week the tour heads to Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio for The Memorial Tournament. Now this is such a huge event on the schedule because this is Jack Nicholas’ own event. Everybody knows how important Jack was and is to the game so to win at his course and his event is the dream of many golfers out on tour. With that being said the field this week is stacked to say the least. This week fans will be able to watch Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Rory McIlroy. Gear up fans were in for yet another showdown. (Mike)
As golf fans, how lucky are we over the next few months? The US open, The Open, the Playoffs and then The Ryder Cup. The game of golf has never been in a better spot in my opinion. There are so many good players on tour, there are so many big tournaments upcoming and we get to see the best of the best on the biggest stage. All we have to do is sit back and enjoy. (Tyler)
Pick’s of the Week:
Mike: These events are so tough to make picks because the fields are like major championship fields. However this week I’m feeling confident about my picks. This week’s winning pick goes to Jordan Spieth. Jordan is on fire right now, aside from Sunday’s 73 he’s been playing flawless golf. His putter is on fire and the most notable is his driving accuracy. As I said aside from Sunday he’s playing some damn near perfect golf, I’d fully expect him to make another run this weekend.
My notable to miss the cut goes to reigning champion Jon Rahm. Personally I think Rahm is struggling mentally. He’s been letting his temper control him and I think that will ultimately be his downfall. I wouldn’t be surprised if he misses the cut badly this week, but it’s golf so literally anything can happen.
Lastly my underdog winning pick goes to Charlie Hoffman. Hoffman is coming off an incredible weekend last week at the Charles Schwab, posting a final round score of 8 under par 62 missing the course record by 1. Golf is all about who’s getting hot at the right time and Hoffman is feeling really good about his game this week. (Mike)
Tyler: While I agree with Mike, I think Spieth is all the way back and then some, but I do not think this is Spieth’s week. My pick for this week is Rory Mcllroy. He has not been playing the best golf of his career, but it can all change around just like that. I think Rory finds form again and does just enough on Sunday to win.
I hate when I pick Bryson to miss the cut because it usually means he ends up playing well, but I do not feel strongly about anyone missing the cut so I picked the guy I like least. I would love to see him miss the cut, but past logic says since I picked him here he will probably be contending this weekend.
My dark horse to win is Patrick Reed. I feel like not many people talk about Reed because most people do not like him. He is a very good golfer though and it would not shock me to see him contending down the stretch on Sunday. (Tyler)
