The Genesis Invitational
Well the Waste Management Open did not disappoint on both sides of the coin. For starters on the golf side of things, Nick Taylor put on a row to close out his final round. Taylor squeezed his way into a playoff with Charley Hoffman after making birdie on three of his last four holes including 18. Taylor then goes on to birdie 18 two more times on both playoff holes. Hoffman hung around for as long as he could but Nick Taylor just seemed to be unbeatable last week. As for the atmosphere and the fans, I think the event should be called the ‘Wasted Management Open” from now on. Don’t get me wrong I think the fan involvement is great and the energy is awesome but some of the fans forget where they are sometimes. For starters heckling players while they are over the ball and about to hit their shot is the big issue. I’m all for heckling and carrying on and having fun but there needs to be a line that every fan can see. The fans seemed worse this year, I mean there were grown men being carried out and people passed out all over the grounds. The tip of the iceberg was Sunday afternoon all alcohol sales were suspended and they stopped letting fans in. This is probably the first time ever alcohol sales were suspended at a golf tournament because people got too drunk. Despite all the negatives, it is the People’s Open and if players don’t like the behavior then just don’t show up but every year players keep showing up and having a good time with the fans regardless of everything else. The biggest news of the week however is happening off the golf course.
As of this morning, Tiger Woods and Taylormade have released Tiger’s new clothing line “Sun Day Red.” So far the clothing line looks pretty good, the logo is subtle, the color schemes are great and there is a wide variety of clothes, even golf gloves as well. Regardless of how the merchandise came out the clothing line would sell itself because well it's Tiger Woods and that's all there is to it.
Speaking of Tiger Woods, us golf fans will get the pleasure of watching him back in action this week at The Genesis Invitational. His season debut couldn’t have come at a better time. With the issues at the Waste Management and this ever so lingering problem with LIV, the PGAT could use a spark, and that spark is Tiger Woods. Is no surprise that even now Tiger Woods is the needle for golf and that will seemingly be the standard for years to come. I’m sure Riviera Country Club, the host course will be flooded with massive crowds all in hopes of capturing a glimpse of the game’s greatest. Not only will it be flooded but TV ratings will follow in similar footsteps. This will be a major help for the continuously struggling PGAT. With that being said, I don’t think Tiger has a chance. At this point, I think the best he could do is top 15. I just don’t think he can keep up with some of the players on tour right. Nevertheless, I love being wrong about these things. I can however say for certainty that a Tiger will rock the golf community. Tiger fans will also be able to tune into some of the game's hottest players including Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Max Homa, and Tony Finau. On top of a star-studded field, Riviera Country Club brings its own kind of fun to the table. Between the fast, edgulated greens and the daunting tee shots, Riviera never disappoints.
